Philocalist

Artist rendering of COVID experience
,
South Africa

As part of my high school art class, I was given a theme called Burden - but, I took a different approach and based my artwork around Disburden. I named my artwork Philocalist, as it means a lover of beauty; someone who finds and appreciates beauty in all things. Instead of carrying the burden of negativity, but you can disburden by finding beauty in everything.

At the beginning of the process I wanted to create a landscape painting with no human figures, but I changed my mind. As I loved the photograph this painting is based on - I thought the artwork would be missing something without it.

The world is constantly changing. Within the past year, the spread of Covid-19 forced us to appreciate the thing we had once taken for granted. In the little moments, where we were able to pause and reflect on our lives, I found great comfort; and this is something I hope to articulate in my work.

I hope that in the future we, as a society, are able to find greater beauty in the little things, bad times, and simple moments.

Oh, and world peace.
